Prolonged obstructed labor causes a condition called vesico-vaginal fistula that leaves women constantly leaking urine and feces.

The sense of shame attached to this condition along with the inability to access modern healthcare makes it nearly impossible for fistula sufferers to get treatment.

In US dollars, a single fistula repair, including the necessary 10-14 day post-operative care period is $350-$400. But, fistula hospitals are scarce in Africa.
