About Our Name The Helena Ptochia Foundation has a unique name which is grounded in its mission of service. During his reign in the late third century, Constantine requested that his mother, Helena oversee a hospital system which would serve the poor. Helena founded hospitals called ptochias which were primarily for those who could not afford hospital care. In recognition of the work done in this field by Helena, our foundation was named in her honor: The Helena Ptochia Foundation. One out of every twelve women in Africa dies in childbirth.
